While some retail and restaurants have shuttered temporarily, more are on the way

Developer Carter has been barreling ahead with its multifaceted redevelopment near the former Turner Field stadium despite a public health crisis that’s threatened or stalled construction projects across the world.

Some construction sites around metro Atlanta have shut down as the novel coronavirus forces people to isolate themselves, but much of the Carter-controlled retail and residential district remains an active worksite, with new residences and retail on the rise.

“While the economic impacts of COVID-19 are real and widespread, Carter has continued to work with partners and tenants to ensure its properties remain strong,” said the developer’s senior vice president David Nelson in an email to Curbed Atlanta.

Several tenants in the neighborhood have opted to shutter during the pandemic, although, Nelson said, “Halfway Crooks and Little Bear remain open for carry-out orders, and we’ve been blown away by the support the neighborhood and city have shown for these tenants.”

Plus, he added, two more restaurants—Birmingham-based Hero Doughnuts & Buns and HotDog Pete’s—are primed to debut in a month or two, barring more virus-related complications.

Early last month, contractor Gay Construction broke ground on another retail building along fast-evolving Georgia Avenue, claiming a large former gravel parking area.

Carter officials are in leasing talks for three of the five spaces at the building—the other two are already claimed—with delivery slated for early next year.

An apartment project moving forward on Hank Aaron Drive, under construction by New South/Synergy, is still on track to open next Summer, Nelson said.

And Hedgewood Homes should soon wrap construction on the first 10-unit phase of a townhome development.
Another 16 townhouses are expected in a later phase.
